The self-assessment tax system in the UK was introduced in 1996 by the Inland Revenue (now HM Revenue & Customs – HMRC). It was implemented to shift the responsibility of assessing and paying income tax from the government to individual taxpayers.
Before self-assessment, the government used to calculate and collect taxes directly from employers and pension providers based on the information they had. However, this system didn’t account for income from various sources or changes in circumstances that could affect an individual’s tax liability. Self-assessment was introduced to address these issues and make the tax system fairer and more accurate.
